Time warps: old photos of Kyiv from the early 1960s

Kyiv resembles one of the oldest and most important cities of Eastern Europe. From its more recent history: Kyiv suffered greatly throughout World War II as it was occupied by Nazi Germany from 19 September 1941 until 6 November 1943. It is estimated that in the clashes around Kyiv, more than 600,000 Soviet soldiers lost their lives. Many of them were captured and they never returned again.

After the war, the city entered a new era and recovered economically throughout the 1950s. The latter part of the decade, as well as the early 1960s, were a new moment of the Soviet Union as a whole. Back then the biggest country on the planet, the Soviet Union started to implement its de-Stalinization policies and the photos we share below (via Star Kiev) show us a glimpse of new construction efforts that brought new vitality and freshness to the city life.
